Don’t let your personal devices be a backdoor into your business

Cyber security is everyone’s business.

Cybercriminals are targeting unsuspecting business owners and employees in an effort to attack Australian organisations, and the consequences can be costly. It’s a trend that is highly likely to continue, according to the Australian Signals Directorate’s Australian Cyber Security Centre, the Australian Government’s leading authority on cyber security.

Using personal devices to log in to work accounts can be convenient, especially when on the move or working remotely. However, personal devices are also a common target of cybercriminals trying to access our network.

Cybercriminals use malware to access your personal and work information, including usernames, passwords, email contacts, chat logs, financial and system information.

Phishing emails and messages, malicious search results and online ads, and pirated or legitimate-looking software downloads are just some of the ways malware may be hidden.

By taking simple steps to improve the security of your personal computer, mobile, and other devices, you can help keep your business secure.

Here are some tips:

  • be aware and do not click on suspicious links or download files or software from unknown or untrusted sources
  • set up Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) on your personal accounts and devices
  • use unique passwords for all work and personal accounts, and update them regularly
  • consider using passphrases instead of passwords
  • avoid saving work account information in your personal password manager or browser autofill feature
  • use a reputable antivirus software on all devices
  • keep apps, software and operating systems up-to-date
