From 1 May 2025, Queensland first home buyers purchasing a brand-new home or vacant land to build their first home on, could be entitled to a full concession on the transfer duty (also known as stamp duty) – this means a potential saving of up to $24,525.
Under the Queensland Government’s First Home Concession scheme, no transfer duty applies to a home valued under $800,000. If the purchase price is higher than that, then the Home Concession scheme may apply as long as the applicant meets certain criteria.
The change was originally announced by Queensland Premier David Crisafulli as the recently elected government sought to make homeownership more achievable for Queenslanders.
Responding to the Queensland transfer duty changes, MFAA CEO Anja Pannek said the association welcomed any measures which made it easier for first home buyers to purchase property.
“Many first home buyers use the services of a mortgage broker, with our 2025 Value of Mortgage and Finance Broking Report showing that 45% of brokers’ owner-occupier customers are first home buyers compared to 30% in the market,” Ms Pannek said.
“With their expertise and skills, mortgage brokers are best placed to help first home buyers understand the many different federal and state-based home buying grants and schemes, and other incentives, such as the Queensland transfer duty concession. Their ultimate goal is to assist Australians to achieve their dreams of home ownership.”
