MFAA engages with key decision-makers in Canberra

The MFAA takes pride in being the voice of mortgage and finance brokers, advocating for your interests to ensure policy settings are fit for purpose and the industry thrives.

MFAA CEO Anja Pannek and Executive of Policy and Legal Naveen Ahluwalia spent the week in Canberra, engaging with key politicians, policymakers, and regulators.

The visit aligned with the first parliamentary sitting week of the new Labor government, enabling the association to reinforce the role brokers play in delivering competition, choice, and financial confidence for consumers and business owners.

Ms Pannek and Ms Ahluwalia met with Treasury, ASIC, the Assistant Treasurer and Minister for Financial Services, the Hon. Dr Daniel Mulino (pictured above), Shadow Minister for Productivity, Deregulation, Housing and Homelessness, Senator Andrew Bragg, Australian Small Business and Family Enterprise Ombudsman (ASBFEO), the Hon. Bruce Billson.

They also held talks with the offices of Treasurer Jim Chalmers and Minister for Housing, Homelessness and Cities, the Hon. Clare O’Neil, to brief decision-makers on MFAA member priorities.

These included:
• the need to improve the home loan discharge process;
• progressing open banking and Consumer Data Right implementation in home lending;
• shaping a fit-for-purpose Compensation Scheme of Last Resort;
• and pursuing deregulation opportunities for small business broker members.

Discussions with Senator Bragg covered deregulation in the home lending sector and removing red tape for broker small businesses.

In a meeting with the Hon. Bruce Billson, Ms Pannek also discussed cutting red tape for broker businesses, clarity and consistency in regulation, and greater support for small business operators.

Ms Pannek said the association looks forward to ongoing constructive dialogue with both sides of government.
