Managing a business with two working parents

Sylvia Curley, mortgage broker at Mortgage Advice Bureau, is one of six members featured in our eBook Balancing work, life and everything else, sharing her tips and advice for navigating running a business with a work/life balance that allows her to succeed.

After several years of her partner Kylie being a fly-in fly-out mine worker, they have now relocated to Blackwater in the Central Highlands region of Queensland and switched roles with Sylvia now doing the lion’s share of travelling to service her clients in Brisbane.

Between them, Sylvia and her partner Kylie have four children under 14 and she says the busiest times of the year are school holidays when their family of two becomes a family of six.

So how does Sylvia make the travel, being a mortgage broker, co-parenting and splitting her time between the country and city work?

“I prioritise well and set clear expectations and I do what I say I’m going to do,” she said.

She says coordinating calendars with ex-partners can be tricky, so planning, open communication and flexibility are key to making things work and ensuring she can maximise the time she spends with her 8-year-old twins and Kylie’s two children.

“It’s hard to run a business, coordinate fly-in fly-out, coordinate four kids and then on top of that – all of the other relationships you’ve got to manage with your BDMs and your mentor – you’ve got to be flexible, and you’ve got to prioritise,” says Sylvia.

Read Balancing work, life and everything else to see what else Sylvia and other members from different walks of life, different business sizes and different stages of business growth, say have helped them become successful.
