The business case for diversity and inclusion

The business advantage

A diverse and inclusive workplace isn’t just a social good—it’s a business advantage. Research consistently shows that organisations embracing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) experience stronger financial performance, greater innovation, improved talent retention, and enhanced team engagement.

"Diversity and inclusion make good business sense because they deliver a range of positive organisational, team and individual outcomes. A diverse and inclusive workplace is clearly linked to improved profit and performance, innovation, creativity, talent management, engagement and wellbeing."

— Diversity Council of Australia

The case for diversity in business

Global research from McKinsey & Company, which has studied the business case for diversity since 2015, shows that:

  • The link between executive team diversity and financial outperformance continues to strengthen.
  • Companies in the top quartile for gender and ethnic diversity are significantly more likely to outperform financially.
  • Diverse organisations drive greater innovation and problem-solving, leading to a competitive advantage.

Why diversity matters in finance broking

In 2019, the MFAA published The Business Case for Diversity and Inclusion, providing research and insights on how a more inclusive industry benefits brokers, businesses, and consumers.
A more diverse broking industry:

  • Reflects the diverse communities’ brokers serve.
  • Strengthens customer relationships through cultural awareness and understanding.
  • Expands the talent pool, bringing in a broader range of skills, experiences, and perspectives.
  • Enhances decision-making and business resilience.
